On the surface this volcanic boulder* dating back to the Missoula Floods, looks like any other rock. Only when it was sheared by the vineyard manager's backhoe, did it reveal a different perspective; a reminder of what lies beneath the surface does, in fact matter. Just as crafting a signature entrée or a tasting a varietal for your wine list, it’s about expressing your vision through a creative process. #ebmdsolutions
The Backstory: I took this image of a soil pit, while attending a winemaking education event in Oregon's Yamhill-Carlton AVA. When planting a new block, winemakers look for those special geographical anomalies. These sites, perched on steep ridges & mountainsides, exhibit soils not found on the valley floor. Like diamonds, the right determination & maniacal exploration exhibits, “the terroir”, showcasing why wines born here celebrate this sense of place. * These “moonstones” date back to the last US ice age, when billions of water tore through the Columbia River Gorge flooding and changing the landscape of Washington, Oregon, Idaho and Montana creating places where today, vineyards, farmlands and orchards, sustain in these special spaces.
